Coding academy for underrepresented youth finds home at WMU.
KALAMAZOO, Mich.—A Kalamazoo couple have pooled their combined professional experiences and skills to form a nonprofit organization that teaches computer coding, programming, and other areas of technology to underrepresented youth in the Kalamazoo area. After about a dozen years of hosting classes around the area, the Milo Coding Academy began holding classes and club meetings at Western Michigan University’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

Milo Coding Academy strives to introduce underrepresented students to the world of technology through events, workshops, mentorships, and coding courses, while putting them on the path to programming and computer science careers.

In U.S. high schools, the Advanced Placement exam in Computer Science has historically (since the beginning of the century) had only 22 percent participation by young women. This gender gap problem extends to university programs and to the software workplace, which suffer a similar lack of diversity. Code.org
In these classes, middle and high school students will get to learn concepts that span all programming languages and tools.

We have been teaching coding in the Kalamazoo, Southwest Michigan area for over 12 years, partnering with community organizations and Western Michigan University.
